{"id":2217,"date":"2026-02-16T16:09:27","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T15:09:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/?p=2217"},"modified":"2026-02-19T14:14:55","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T13:14:55","slug":"ai-hype-and-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/ai-hype-and-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"AI Hype and Reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last November, a few colleagues and I attended the Gartner Symposium in Barcelona.<br \/>\nThis conference always manages <strong>to be exhausting, slightly overwhelming, occasionally superficial -and genuinely excellent-<\/strong> all at the same time. A bit like tapas: many small plates, not all memorable, but the overall experience is worth it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What I particularly enjoy is the high-end mix between:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; research-based insights showing where technology topics actually stand,<br \/>\n&#8211; unexpected keynote conversations,<br \/>\n&#8211; and the familiar (and slightly ritualistic) \u201ctop IT trends\u201d narrative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This year\u2019s speakers included an eclectic and memorable lineup:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Margrethe Vestager former Executive Vice-President of the European Commission (digital &#038; competition policy)<br \/>\n&#8211; Charles Duhigg bestselling author (The Power of Habit, Smarter Faster Better)<br \/>\n&#8211; Dr Michelle Dickinson science communicator and keynote speaker<br \/>\n&#8211; Bear Grylls adventurer, TV host, author, professional reminder that corporate life is comparatively comfortable<br \/>\n&#8211; Jo Malone perfume entrepreneur, probably the most unexpected talk of the event \u2014 and one I enjoyed immensely. As distinctive as her fragrances.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, plenty of AI discussions -because 2025 without AI would be like Barcelona without Gaud\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, something from the 2023 conference resurfaced in my mind during this year\u2019s edition -the growing gap between expectations and reality around AI.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/InstaVSReality-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"692\" height=\"434\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/InstaVSReality-1.jpg 692w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/InstaVSReality-1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/InstaVSReality-1-230x144.jpg 230w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/InstaVSReality-1-350x220.jpg 350w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/InstaVSReality-1-480x301.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 692px) 100vw, 692px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Several points stood out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AI value: still early days<\/strong><br \/>\nGartner presented data suggesting that around 20% of AI initiatives achieve clear ROI, while only about 2% generate truly disruptive value.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1317\" height=\"410\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner11.jpg 1317w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner11-300x93.jpg 300w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner11-1024x319.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner11-768x239.jpg 768w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner11-830x258.jpg 830w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner11-230x72.jpg 230w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner11-350x109.jpg 350w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner11-480x149.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1317px) 100vw, 1317px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That is both encouraging and sobering -AI delivers value, but not automatically and not everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The CFO perspective<\/strong><br \/>\nPredictably, CFOs appear even more cautious than CIOs (which is saying something).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1421\" height=\"646\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner12.jpg 1421w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner12-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner12-1024x466.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner12-768x349.jpg 768w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner12-830x377.jpg 830w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner12-230x105.jpg 230w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner12-350x159.jpg 350w, https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/wp-content\/2026\/02\/Gartner12-480x218.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1421px) 100vw, 1421px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Translation: <strong>\u201cInteresting technology &#8211; now show me the numbers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GenAI reliability (the part nobody loves)<\/strong><br \/>\nOne figure that sparked discussion: <strong>generative AI error rates can still be around 25%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s perfectly acceptable when drafting ideas or summaries. <strong>Less so when 100% accuracy is required<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Which leads to practical implications:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; define formal quality metrics<br \/>\n&#8211; implement two-factor error checking<br \/>\n&#8211; think explicitly about the \u201cgood-enough threshold\u201d<br \/>\n&#8211; invest in AI literacy for staff<\/p>\n<p><strong>In short: AI still needs adult supervision<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AI ? Organizations <strong>should move quickly to explore where AI creates real value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But AI is probably not the universal solution to every operational problem.
