{"id":2227,"date":"2026-02-23T07:00:04","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T06:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/?p=2227"},"modified":"2026-02-20T08:39:59","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T07:39:59","slug":"digital-geopolitics-the-costly-illusion-of-neutrality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/embargo.ch\/AllBlog\/digital-geopolitics-the-costly-illusion-of-neutrality\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Geopolitics: The Costly Illusion of Neutrality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was recently asked a simple question: <strong>\u201cIs technology really neutral?\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The answer is no.<\/strong> And that illusion has cost us dearly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iris-france.org\/chercheurs\/ophelie-coelho\/\">Oph\u00e9lie Coelho<\/a>, a researcher in geopolitics, explained it clearly on RTS: for decades, governments treated technology as \u201csomeone else\u2019s problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMany political leaders were trained to believe that technology is not their subject -that it belongs to engineers. But we now realize we must engage with it, and we are starting from very far behind.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>And she adds, without hesitation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea that technology is neutral -that globalization and the \u2018information highway\u2019 would naturally produce peace and open societies -was a myth. Digital companies presented themselves as neutral actors, but they are companies whose purpose is profit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing: this is not just a public governance issue. It\u2019s a leadership issue -everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>How many times have you heard, \u201cTech is IT\u2019s responsibility\u201d? Or worse: \u201cIt\u2019s mainly a cost issue\u201d? Meanwhile, you delegate your resilience to a vendor, your independence to a cloud architecture, and your competitive advantage to\u2026 well, to hope.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The uncomfortable truth:<\/strong> technology is never neutral. Markets are never neutral. Platforms are never neutral.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what do we do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The shift that is emerging -in governments and in companies -is the same: technology is gradually becoming a shared leadership responsibility, not a specialty to be delegated away.<\/p>\n<p>Which means that for leaders, at every level, the real question is no longer, \u201cDoes technology matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is: \u201cHow do we integrate this understanding into our collective strategy?\u201d Because understanding it together is already a start.
